When Were Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) Introduced?

Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) were first introduced in the United Kingdom in August 2007 as part of the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). Initially rolled out for larger domestic properties being sold, the scheme soon expanded to include all residential and commercial buildings:

  • August 2007 – EPCs became mandatory for domestic properties with four or more bedrooms being sold.

  • October 2008 – EPCs became a requirement for all homes being sold or rented.

  • January 2009 – EPCs became compulsory for all non-domestic buildings being constructed, sold, or rented.

The introduction of EPCs aimed to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions by giving property owners and tenants clear information about a building’s energy usage and practical ways to improve it.
